Domain, Hosting and Website Handoff Checklist

A website handoff should leave the business able to operate its site and understand its recurring responsibilities.

Domain and hosting

  • Record the domain registrar and the business account that owns the domain.
  • Identify renewal contacts and billing responsibility.
  • Document the hosting provider and deployment process.
  • Record which DNS records support the website and email before making changes.

Domain registration, website hosting and email hosting can be separate services. Moving one does not automatically move the others.

Files, content and permissions

Confirm what source files, assets and editing instructions are included. Keep a record of image and font licenses and any third-party components. Document backup and restoration steps appropriate to the hosting setup.

Forms and connected services

Record each form’s destination and the account responsible for it. Verify a controlled test reaches the intended recipient. List booking, analytics or other integrations and their owners; do not copy secret keys into a public handoff document.

Ongoing responsibilities

Agree on who handles content changes, software updates and service renewals. Use provider invitations to share only the access needed. Review the handoff against the project agreement so ownership, support and recurring costs are explicit.
